St Mary's and all Saints

St Mary's and All Saints

Wraxhill Road

St Mary's and All Saints church was a daughter church of the parish church of Holy Trinity and was located on the northeast corner of the junction of Wraxhill Road and Lower Wraxhill Road.

It was originally a temporary mission church built in corrugated iron on the same site in 1946. The new church, illustrated below, was a controversial modern design with timber-clad walls and a flat roof. It was dedicated on 18 May 1958 by the Bishop of bath and Wells, the Right Reverend Harold Bradfield (1898-1960).

The font was transferred from the parish church of St Andrew, Trent, Dorset. The main crucifix, designed by the ecclesiastical architect Sir John Ninian Comper (1864-1960), was transferred from the parish church of St John the Evangelist, Clevedon, Somerset.

After being in use for some forty years, St Mary's and All Saints church was declared redundant. It was demolished and bungalows were built in the site.
