Reginald William Hutchings

Butcher of Princes Street

Reginald William Hutchings was born during the spring of 1862 in Stalbridge, Dorset. He was the son and second of the nine children of farmer and veterinary surgeon Hutchings (b1830) and Fanny née Curtis (1835-1909). John and Fanny's children were; Frederick William (b1857), Reginald William, Bessie Louisa (b1863), Charles Richard (b1866), Fanny Jane (b1867), Christiana Mary (b1869), Elizabeth Amelia (b1871), Laura Kate (b1874) and Lily Gertrude (b1878).

In the census of both 1871 and 1881, the family were living at Anteox Farm, Stalbridge. On 9 February 1887, at Tintinhull, Reginald married Charlotte Ann Isaac (b1865), the daughter of Tintinhull butcher Andrew Isaac. They were to have four children; Theresa, known as Trissie (b1888), Ernest (b1894), Reginald Roy, known as Roy (b1897) and Alec Ralph (1900-1974). Reginald and Charlotte initially lived in Chilthorne Domer, where Theresa was born, but had moved to Yeovil by 1891 and their three sons were all born in Yeovil.

The 1891 census listed Reginald, Charlotte and 3-year-old Theresa at 22 Princes Street, where the family lived above the butcher's shop. Living with them was a butcher's apprentice and a general domestic servant. Reginald gave his occupation simply as a butcher. The 1901 census was similar but with the addition of Ernest, Roy and Alec plus a housemaid and a 14-year-old nurse. In 1911, still at the same address, were Reginald and Charlotte together with Ernest, Reginald Jnr and Alec, together with a domestic servant. Reginald Snr still gave his profession as a butcher while Charlotte was "assisting in the business" and Ernest was a chemist's apprentice.

Unfortunately, I lost track of Reginald after this date.
