Yeovil People
1847 Will of Mary Glyde née Watts
Widow of James Glyde
Mary Watts was the daughter of Yeovil solicitor Samuel Watts the Elder (1734-1820) and Betty née Bullock. She was born in Yeovil around 1770. Mary had five brothers: George Bullock (1772-1837), Samuel the younger (1774-1843), Edward Bullock (1785-1849), Joseph (1786-1828, Calcutta, India), and Thomas Bullock (b1787) as well as three sisters; Winifred (b 1780), Grace (married James Cayme the Younger in January 1806) and Hannah (who remained unmarried) whose dates are unknown.
On 12 April 1796, at St John's church, Mary married James Glyde (1761-1837), a partner in her father's Yeovil Bank. Mary and James had at least one son, china and glassware dealer George Glyde (1797-1831) who was born in Preston Plucknett in 1797.
James died in 1837 and in the 1841 census, Mary was recorded as a 76-year-old widow of independent means, living in Mill Close Cottage, Stars Lane (although more likely, since Stars Lane was mostly devoid of buildings and uninhabited at this time, it was the cottage next to the mill in Mill Lane - see Gallery).
Mary died in Yeovil in 1851.

This photograph was taken in the mid-1960s from the end of Mill Lane. The small building at centre was all that remained of the former Frogg Mill. Summerhouse Terrace ran away to the left at the end of Mill Lane. The house at right, which still stands today, is shown on Mary's brother Edward Bullock Watts' map of 1806 as the only building in Mill Lane (apart form the mill). It is thought to have been Mill Close Cottage, in which Mary Glyde lived in 1841.
