William & Edward Forbes

Gentlemen and proprietors of the Angel Inn

Edward Forbes was born in Yeovil and baptised at St John's church on 30 July 1700. He was the son of William Forbes, the owner of the Angel Inn, standing in Hendford and facing High Street. He also owned lands at Lyde - probably Great Lyde Farm - all of which he left to his son Edward (see below). William also had a son John (d1744) and daughters Betty and Ann, who was married to Edward Jarman.

William Forbes died in Yeovil in 1726.

In 1761 Edward Forbes, then proprietor of the Angel Inn, was noted as the proud owner of a celebrated 'museum' in the kitchen of the inn (for full description see here). Included among Mr Forbes' curiosities was a panel now housed in the Community Heritage Access Centre at Lufton. It is of painted and gilded gesso on oak boards.

It appears that Edward never married and, in turn, left his personal and real estates (see below) to his nephew Bani John Forbes, the son of Edward's brother John and his wife Elizabeth.

Edward Forbes died in Yeovil in 1771.
